Story

+

Riddle me this… What is the beginning of eternity, the end of time and space… the beginning of every end and the end of every race? It’s “E” of course. The AB&D Enigma is a puzzle well worth solving, as a puzzle has many sides, only some visible at first, but the deeper you dig the more is revealed. Barbera is the grape variety here – thought to have originated in the hills of Piemonte it’s high in acid, low in tannin, tricky in the vineyard, tricky in the winery, but by the beard of Zeus does it ever shape-shift into a soifalicious drink in the glass when all the panels of the vinous Rubik’s Cube align.

Winemaking

+

When blending the 2018 Enigma, AB&D Winemaker Sam Berketa kept a barrel from each of the two sites we pick from because he was so impressed with the different expressions each vineyard produced. This is the Berry Vineyard wine. The soil is light brown/red clay-loam over sandstone, with the grapes hand harvested with roughly 60% whole bunches, wild fermentation in open fermenters with pump overs initially during the early stages of fermentation, then plunged twice daily with a gentle pressing cycle. The wine was matured for 18 months predominantly in puncheons (5% new oak) and foudre.
