We need a special place for the ‘icons’. They are venerated examples of how to be; a benchmark for how to strive to reach such levels of glory. There are icons in every industry, standing pretty on their pedestals, a near god-like effigy.

Unsurprisingly, the wine industry is full of icons.

Icona is the story of the classic South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, often overlooked in the popularity contest for the overtly fruit-rich Shiraz. Rich beyond anything that can be achieved in the European climates, Icona celebrates Mclaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon in all it’s glory: dense tannin structure, the ability to outlive the family cat and luscious fruit and spice.

The key to this wine is all about the site. Heavy clays formed over time from the erosion of the Willunga hills are rich with nutrients and contain a deep water-holding capacity that allows us to hang the grapes out on the vine for a little longer to achieve the optimum ripeness.

The Cabernet was machine harvested in the early morning, destemmed at the winery and naturally fermented until dry. Matured for 39 months in French barriques, with no new oak however about 15% second use barriques.
