Story

+

We all associate with the rebels; there is a little rebel hidden away inside us all, even if it often doesn’t get to see the light of day. When everyone is talking, the rebel stays quiet; when everyone is silent, the rebel makes the noise – rebels are ace. Montepulciano, originally hailing from Abruzzo, has become a rebel in Australia, shifting perceptions of what wine should drink life. Edgy, sexy, delicious, with bright, crunchy fruits, detail, structure and line.

2020 was an interesting vintage for many reason (bushfires, COVID and super small yields among them) but the story of our Monte shows that adversity can lead to surprising delights. Following a freak weather pattern right in the middle of flowering and fruit set, the Montepulciano flowers were left unfertilized, meaning the berries were tiny and seedless. This makes the resulting wine had a greater concentration of softer, less bitter skin tannins.

In summary? It's the best Rebel Rebel yet, but possibly one we're unlikely to be able to reproduce again anytime soon!

Winemaking

+

The 2020 vintage was hand picked in the early morning and picked early to focus on bright fresh acidity. 80% whole bunch fermentation with wild yeasts for as much carbonic as possible, plunging for gentle tannin and colour extraction and to get some stem spice and structure through the wine. Six months maturation in stainless steel and cask on full lees. Only 30ppm Sulphur added prior to bottling.
