Siren is the most elusive and seductive of our wines. Grown in the closest region to the ocean, the wine has a salt-kissed palate melded with beautiful cherry aromas and kept fresh by acidity. Nero d'Avola translates into "black of Avola", Avola being a town on the south east coast of Sicily, so it's a variety that's been forged in the most Mediterranean of climates and retains a bright, punchy natural acidity even in the most arid of environs. Given McLaren Vale’s similarity in climate to the Mediterranean, it’s fitting that Siren is our ode to McLaren Vale’s unique bond between sea and vines within South Australia’s wine regions. However, Siren’s most alluring quality is how it’s made in a style the Italians wouldn’t dream of…

Hand harvested in the cool of morning, 100% whole bunch fermented with natural yeast across 5 small fermenters. Half was pressed off after 2 weeks of maceration, 50% pressed off after 1 month of maceration. Pressed using our hand-crank basket press.

I want to showcase what Nero can do in Mclaren Vale that almost no other variety can: to make a bright, incredibly complex wine that is has all the delicacy of Pinot Noir but from a warm, dry region. The ability for Nero d'Avola to retain great acidity and have so much intruiging spice and herbal characters in the face of the Mclaren Vale growing conditions makes it the perfect candidate to achieve my goal and the 2020 Siren definitely exhibits that.
