2016 Shiraz / Durif
Region: McLaren Vale / Adelaide Hills
A 1500mL Magnum of our 2016 Apostle Shiraz/Durif. All hand-bottled with love at AB&D McLaren Vale Cellar Door.
The Apostle brings a message.
He railed against the world of wine. He hissed – and spat – spreading his message of reform. His words so powerful, you can almost smell his mad breath, see the smoke curl up from the yellow pages of his good book and hear the blood-curdling moans of despair. He speaks of reform in the vineyard, treating the earth and vines with respect, of reform in the art of the blend and making a complete wine. He laments the fact that in the 80s and 90s, Shiraz was blended with Viognier, creating what he sees as “Shiraz with training-wheels” … We all deserve better then that.
Here, the Durif doesn’t diminish, but enhances the aromas and flavours of Shiraz. Distinctly Cornas-like in its sway across the palate – it’s inky, compact and earthy, with a solid core of slatey fruit that strike through the wine like an obelisk of vinous truth. It is a wine that speaks of a robust, cordial conversation between two grape varieties that understand each other and share the same worldview of place and drinkability.
