Kerri Wright

Every Lazarus bottle wears the work of Adelaide artist, printmaker and tattooist Kerri Wright—a long-time friend of Alpha Box & Dice. Working primarily in woodcut and lino print, her hand-carved artwork draws on folklore, mythology and centuries-old printmaking traditions, giving Lazarus a visual language that's every bit as expressive as the wine itself.

"I think I have one foot firmly planted in fantasy. All the little characters in my work are plucked from my own world, where everything has its own personality. Even the little devils and demon guys are just here for a good time."

"The 'back from the dead' story of Lazarus was very much in my wheelhouse. The old devilish creature is pouring old wine onto the fresh new grapes, and I chose woodcut because it lends itself to an old-world, medieval style—which is something I love."

"This wine is made by pouring old wine onto new grapes, so that's why Ripasso is spelt backwards on the label. The archway is meant to resemble a cave where this old demon guy has emerged carrying his wine, while the woman figure represents the fresh new grapes. That's why the old devilish creature is pouring his old wine onto our fresh, young grape lady."

"Something I've learned through printmaking is to embrace the mistakes. Once you've carved something, you can't undo it—you just have to roll with it. Working the design around those errors can create something even more interesting in the final print."
