Dead Winemakers Society 2020 DOLCETTO

NOSE: Ripe cherries, sour plums, black pepper and dark chocolate.

PALATE: The whole mouth fills with a satin explosion of soft berry fruits and silky tannins. The acid is soft and gentle, making it a pleasure to drink.

PAIR: Pizza, pasta, the usual Italian fare.

The Dead Winemakers Society is our homage to those visionary individuals that carved their path in the wine industry before us. They were the crazy ones, the wild-eyed wine poets who had a deep respect for both the land they farmed and the process of guiding the fruit to bottle in the most thoughtful and composed manner possible.

PALATE: Grippy tannins unwind into a mid-weight palate that is lifted on a dynamic acid line that ends with a chewy, structure driven finish.

The tale of Lazarus is an iconic biblical story, one that details the miracle of Jesus reviving poor Laz after succumbing to the rigours of a deadly disease. With our zombie wine, things are no less iconic; Lazarus is entering its fifth reincarnation, becoming smoother and more finely tuned. Taking a bitzer blend, with a bit o’ this and a bit o’ that, Lazarus sees 16 varieties from across 12 different vintages ripasso’d over Nebbiolo skins to restore, rejuvenate and revitalise these old batches with a new lick of paint. In essence, the classic technique of ripasso is the taking of wine from one grape and passing it over the skins of another to gift complexity to a cuvée. And complex it is, from start to finish, it’s a wild ride that balances old characters with fresh fruits, all bound together by savoury structure.

X ROSSO 2022

NOSE: Cherry ripe, chai and rhubarb.

PALATE: Mellow fruits fill the mouth, roughening on the edges where the supple tannins kick in, and all finished off with a tidy tickle of tart acid.

PAIR: Capricciosa pizza, truffle pasta and caprese salad.

The ultimate medley of red grapes combine for the next X wine: Dolcetto, Nebbiolo and Barbera. Each of these varieties supports the others to create a harmonious fusion of perfect balance - Dolcetto provides the sweet, soft fruits; savoury, dusty structure from Nebbiolo and Barbera bringing up the year with a kick of zesty acidity. An exquisite example of the beauty of blends, a true 'vino da tavola' - it goes on the table with every meal, because it goes with every meal on the table.

PALATE:Juicy and structured, layered with rich ripe fruits with a restrained edge of herbs and a slight hint of salinity creeping in.
